The 29-year-old became a free agent this summer after departing Juventus following the expiration of his contract at the end of the previous season.
Rabiot had attracted plenty of interest with Manchester United, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid among the teams who considered a move.
However, the France international joined Marseille and signed a two-year contract with the French club.
‘I didn’t necessarily expect animosity but I didn’t expect 500 supporters to welcome me either,’ Rabiot said.
‘A city like Marseille, a stadium with one of the best atmospheres in Europe, the passion for the people, that counted because I am constantly looking for emotion in football.’
During his time at Paris Saint-Germain in 2016, Rabiot said that he could not envisage playing for Marseille in his career.
When asked about his historic comments, Rabiot said: ‘No, I don’t have to explain anything to anyone, I’m making my career.
‘What it teaches is that in life nothing is impossible, there are certain things that we say when we’re younger, and with more experience and certain circumstances, it can turn out to be different. I made my choice calmly, and I’m very happy to be here.
‘It may have disappointed some, but it’s a choice that belongs to me.’
Rabiot also revealed he had the full backing of his family after his mother and representative, Veronique, was called ‘incompetent’ by a French agent this week.
‘It might not have seemed obvious to them either,’ the midfielder said.
‘But by talking with the management and seeing the enthusiasm of the supporters on the networks even before my arrival, they became very happy for me and it is important that my family is well, and behind me.’
