New Delhi: Rinku Singh has opened up about his exclusion from the T20 World Cup 2024 squad and shared details about his conversation with Rohit Sharma. The India captain's words of encouragement have helped him stay positive about his future career. Rinku's omission from the final 15-man squad surprised many, given his impressive performances for the national team leading up to the tournament.
However, Rinku was a part of the four-member travelling team. Revealing the insights of his conversation with Rohit, Rinku said that the Indian captain asked him to work hard as there are World Cups in every two years. “He came to me and made me understand that it was okay; you are still very young. There will be many World Cups in the future,” Rinku told News24.
“Keep working hard. There is a World Cup every two years, so focus on that. Don’t be disappointed,” Rinku quoted Rinku. Ever since his debut in 2023, Rinku has scored 418 runs in 23 T20Is while batting in the lower middle order at an average of 59.71.
Rinku also spoke about his admiration for both Rohit and Virat Kohli for their leadership and aggressive captaincy respectively. “I like Rohit Sharma’s captaincy. I like Virat Kohli as well because aggression is very important while leading a team. So, his captaincy was also very good,” Rinku stated.
The southpaw from Uttar Pradesh first came into limelight when he hit Gujarat Titans pacer Yash Dayan for five sixes in the final over to win the game for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2023. He continued his blazing form in that season, which led to his international debut against Ireland in the same year.
Since then, there was no looking back for Rinku as the Aligarh-born lad took the opportunity with both hands, especially against Australia in T20Is at home. A gun fielder, Rinku also had a good series against Afghanistan at the start of 2024.
