New Delhi: Indian cricket icon and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) stalwart, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, has recently indicated his strong desire to extend his playing career in the Indian Premier League (IPL) beyond 2025. Despite being 43 years old, Dhoni has made it clear that he is fully focused on staying in top physical shape to compete in the sport for the foreseeable future. His words point towards a continued association with CSK in IPL 2025 and possibly beyond, indicating his commitment to playing a key role in the team's journey over the next few years.

“I just want to enjoy whatever last few years of cricket I am able to play,” said Dhoni in a promotional event for software brand Rigi, for whom he’s a brand ambassador, as quoted by Times of India.

“When you play cricket like a professional sport, it becomes difficult to enjoy it just like a game. That’s what I want to do. It’s not easy. The emotions keep coming, the commitments are there. I want to enjoy the game for the next few years,” said Dhoni.

Dhoni’s subsequent remarks further clarified that the IPL is firmly on his radar.

“I have to keep myself fit for nine months, so that I can play two and a half months of IPL. You need to plan it out, but at the same time chill a bit,” Dhoni said.

Dhoni has officially transferred the captaincy of CSK to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of IPL 2024. Nevertheless, as a five-time IPL-winning captain and one of the tournament’s most prominent figures, his continued involvement would be a significant boost for the IPL.

Having not played for Team India in over five years, Dhoni is eligible to be retained by CSK as an uncapped player at a cost of only ₹4 crore. This opportunity arises due to the reinstatement of a rule that was previously abolished in 2021.
