New Delhi: In a historic moment on Thursday, February 20, Mohammed Shami secured his place in the record books as only the second Indian bowler to achieve a five-wicket haul in the prestigious Champions Trophy. The seasoned 34-year-old pacer from Amroha showcased his talent in India's opening match of the 2025 Champions Trophy, held at the iconic Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Making his Champions Trophy debut for India on Thursday, Shami struck early, claiming his first wicket on the final ball of the opening over. In his fourth over, he dismissed Mehidy Hasan Miraz on the second ball, and then, in the 43rd over of Bangladesh’s innings, Shami took out Jaker Ali, who had scored 68 runs from 114 balls.

Jaker, caught by Virat Kohli, became the key wicket that allowed Shami to achieve two significant milestones: becoming the second-fastest bowler to reach 200 ODI wickets and surpassing Zaheer Khan’s record to become India’s most successful bowler in ICC white-ball tournaments.

Best bowling figures for India in the Champions Trophy:

Ravindra Jadeja: 5/36 vs West Indies in 2013Mohammed Shami: 5/53 vs Bangladesh in 2025Sachin Tendulkar: 4/38 vs Australia in 1998Zaheer Khan: 4/45 vs Zimbabwe in 2002Ashish Nehra: 4/55 vs Pakistan in 2009

Shami broke through Tanzim Hasan Sakib’s defense on the second ball of the 47th over, claiming his fourth wicket of the game. He completed his five-wicket haul by dismissing Taskin Ahmed on the fourth ball of his final over.

Ravindra Jadeja became the first Indian bowler to achieve a five-wicket haul in the Champions Trophy. The left-arm spinner claimed five wickets for 36 runs in his 10-over spell against the West Indies at The Oval on June 11, 2013.

Shami is now the 12th bowler in history to claim a five-wicket haul in the Champions Trophy.

This achievement also saw Shami surpass Zaheer Khan’s record, making him India’s most successful bowler in ICC ODI tournaments. The 34-year-old has taken 55 wickets in the ODI World Cup and five in the Champions Trophy, while Zaheer had 44 wickets in the World Cup and 15 in the Champions Trophy.

With Shami’s brilliant 5/53, India bowled out Bangladesh for 228 runs in 49.4 overs. Towhid Hridoy was the top scorer for the Najmul Hossain Shanto-led team, making 100 runs off 118 balls. During his innings, Hridoy hit six fours and two sixes. He shared a crucial 154-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Jaker Ali, who contributed 68 runs.
