New Delhi: India's all-rounder Axar Patel showcased his exceptional fielding skills by taking a stunning running catch to dismiss opener Rachin Ravindra, securing the first wicket of the second innings during the 2025 Champions Trophy match in Dubai. Axar's catch mirrored New Zealand's impressive fielding display in the first innings, adding to the excitement of the game.
This moment unfolded in the fourth over. Hardik Pandya had given away a no-ball and a boundary in the initial five balls. However, on the final delivery, he cleverly bowled a slow bouncer outside the off-stump, which Ravindra attempted to play. The left-hander leaned back, aiming for a big uppercut, but he mistimed the shot.
Axar, positioned at deep third, appeared to assess the catch late but quickly sprinted forward and leapt to snatch the ball with both hands. He displayed great composure, managing to secure the catch despite landing on his elbows.

It was a vital breakthrough for India. New Zealand had controlled the game with both ball and fielding during the first innings, restricting India to 249/9. The Men in Blue, however, had a slow start during the bowling powerplay.
Earlier in the same over, Varun Chakaravarthy misjudged the ball in the air, accidentally kicking it to the boundary, which was seen as a clear contrast in fielding skills between the two teams.
Axar’s brilliant catch shifted the momentum and brought India back into the game, reminiscent of his stunning catch of Mitchell Marsh during the 2024 T20 World Cup against Australia. By the end of the over, New Zealand were 17/1 after four overs, with Will Young at the crease alongside Kane Williamson.
India will also rely on Axar to make an impact with the ball. The left-arm spinner has been in superb form, picking up five wickets in the past three ODIs, while maintaining tight and economical spells throughout 2025.
The pitch at Dubai International Cricket Stadium offers sufficient turn for spinners, which India must exploit if they are to have a shot at defending their total.
